What Revenue Means

Revenue is the total income a business earns from its ordinary activities before any costs or expenses are deducted. For most companies, this means money received from selling products or services.

Revenue sits at the very top of the profit and loss statement. It is the starting point for calculating gross profit, operating profit and net profit. Without revenue, there is no business.

What Turnover Means

Turnover means the same thing as revenue in UK accounting: the total value of sales made by a business in a period. It is the figure you report to HMRC, Companies House and often to investors.

The word "turnover" is more common in British English. You will see it on UK tax returns, statutory accounts and bank conversations. "Revenue" is more common in American English, software metrics and investor decks.

Use Cases

Filing UK Accounts

Use turnover as the headline sales figure on Companies House and HMRC filings, where UK terminology is expected.

Investor Conversations

Use revenue when speaking with international investors or presenting in formats aligned with US accounting conventions.

Bank & Lender Discussions

UK banks and lenders often ask for turnover figures when assessing loans, overdrafts or covenants.

Internal Forecasting

Whether you call it revenue or turnover, the calculation — units × price, or total sales value — drives every other forecast.

Mini-FAQ

Is revenue the same as turnover?

In most UK business contexts, yes. Both refer to total sales income before costs. Revenue is more common in US usage; turnover is more common in UK accounting.

Does turnover include VAT?

For VAT-registered businesses, turnover is usually quoted excluding VAT because VAT is collected for HMRC. Always check whether a figure includes or excludes VAT.

Can turnover be different from revenue?

Strictly, turnover sometimes refers only to income from ordinary trading activities. Revenue in a broad accounting sense can include other operating income, depending on the context.

Is turnover the same as profit?

No. Turnover is the top-line income from sales. Profit is what remains after deducting costs. A business can have high turnover and low profit, or vice versa.

How do you calculate annual turnover?

Multiply the number of units sold by the average selling price, or add up the total value of invoices raised for services delivered over the year.
